Aqiqah Animal Requirements: Age, Health & Type
Not every goat is valid for aqiqah. This guide sets out the conditions on type, age and health, the slaughter conditions, and the questions worth asking a provider before you book.

Introduction
A complete guide to aqiqah animal requirements — type, age, health and the slaughter conditions that make the act valid.
Before asking about price, there is a more important question: does the animal meet the aqiqah animal requirements? A slaughter that misses the conditions does not fulfil the sunnah, however large the gathering.
This guide sets out each condition plainly, so you know what to ask.
Which Animals Are Valid for Aqiqah
The animals named directly in the hadith are goats and sheep.
Goat (ma'z)
The most common choice in Malaysia. Well suited to gulai, kurma and sup, and available all year.
Sheep (dha'n)
Fully valid and equal in standing. The meat is softer and less gamey, which suits guests unused to goat.
Cattle and camel
Some Syafi'i scholars allow one cow or camel to count for seven aqiqah shares. Goat and sheep remain the primary choice, since they are what the texts name.
Minimum Age Requirements
The age conditions for aqiqah follow the same conditions as korban. This is the part buyers most often overlook.
Goats
Generally required to have reached one year of age, meaning they have entered their second year.
Sheep
Accepted at a younger age than goats according to the majority, provided the animal is physically mature enough.
Why age matters
An animal that is too young has not reached the development the conditions intend. Ask your provider about the animal's age, not only its weight.
Health and Defect Conditions
The animal must be free of obvious defects. Four are most commonly named by scholars:
- Blindness — in one or both eyes, where it is evident.
- Lameness — to the point of not keeping up with the herd.
- Visible illness — sickness plainly apparent in the animal.
- Extreme emaciation — thin to the point of having no marrow in the bones.
Minor imperfections such as a slightly torn ear do not invalidate it according to the majority, though a sounder animal is preferable.
Want the age and condition confirmed before booking? Just ask.
WhatsApp Us NowIs Weight or Size a Condition?
Weight is not a condition of validity in fiqh. It is a commercial variable — it determines how many portions you end up with.
Why providers quote weight
Because customers want to know the portion count. Live weight and dressed meat weight are two different figures, so ask which one a quote refers to.
Do not confuse weight with validity
A heavier animal does not make the aqiqah more valid. It simply yields more servings.
Slaughter Conditions Under Syariah
Even a qualifying animal is not enough if the slaughter itself is invalid. The essentials:
- The slaughterer is a Muslim who knows the correct method.
- The name of Allah is invoked at the slaughter.
- The blade is sharp and the cut is swift.
- The prescribed vessels are severed according to the halal method.
- A specific intention that this slaughter is the aqiqah of the named child.
You do not need to be present. Simply give the child's name at booking so it is invoked correctly.
How to Vet Your Provider
Four questions that clear up most doubts:
- How old is the animal you will use?
- Who performs the slaughter, and what is their background?
- Can I get confirmation once the slaughter is done?
- Will my child's name be invoked at the slaughter?
A transparent provider answers all four without hesitation. See how we structure the process on our homepage, or check area details such as aqiqah package in Seremban.
Common Misunderstandings
Only male goats are valid
Not true. Female goats are equally valid as long as the age and health conditions are met.
The goat must be a particular colour
No colour condition exists in the texts. Colour preference is custom, not ruling.
Parents must inspect the animal themselves
Not required. Delegating to a provider is an accepted practice.
A more expensive animal carries more reward
Price is not the measure of acceptance. What counts is a valid animal, a valid slaughter and a sincere intention — not the figure on the receipt.
Aqiqah should be delayed until you can afford the best
Delaying until you are able is genuinely permitted if you truly cannot afford it. But delaying merely to buy a larger animal is not an encouraged reason — a package that meets the conditions is already sufficient.
Aqiqah Animal FAQ
Can chicken be used for aqiqah?
No. Aqiqah requires livestock from the same category as korban — goat, sheep, cattle or camel.
Are imported goats valid?
Yes, provided they meet the age and health conditions and are slaughtered by the correct method.
What if a defect is found only after slaughter?
A defect discovered only afterwards does not affect validity according to the majority, since the condition concerns defects evident before the slaughter.
Conclusion
Aqiqah animal requirements come down to three things: the right type of livestock, sufficient age, and freedom from obvious defects — plus a valid slaughter.
We select livestock against these conditions and carry out the slaughter in line with syariah guidance. See our aqiqah packages.
