Aqiqah vs Korban: Two Rituals People Often Confuse

Aqiqah and korban both involve slaughtering livestock, but the reason, the timing and the way the meat is distributed all differ. This comparison sets out each difference in order.

Aqiqah vs Korban: Two Rituals People Often Confuse

Introduction

A simple comparison of aqiqah and korban — the reason, the timing, the count and how the meat is shared.

Confusion between aqiqah and korban is understandable: both involve slaughtering livestock and sharing meat. But the reason and the timing are entirely different.

This short guide sets out the differences one at a time.

The Difference in Brief

Aqiqah is tied to the birth of a child. Korban is tied to Hari Raya Aidiladha. That single distinction explains everything else.

Aqiqah

Performed once for each child, by the guardian. Two goats for a boy, one for a girl.

Korban

Performed annually on Aidiladha and the days of tasyriq, by anyone with the means. One goat per person, or a cow shared between seven.

Why Each One Is Performed

Aqiqah is an expression of gratitude for the gift of a child. It attaches to one event in a family's life.

Korban commemorates the story of Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismail, and is an annual observance of the whole community during the hajj season.

Why this matters

Because it means one does not automatically substitute for the other. Performing korban does not discharge the aqiqah, and the reverse is equally true.

How often each is performed

Aqiqah is performed once in a lifetime for each child. Korban can be repeated every year for as long as a person has the means.

Who performs it

Aqiqah is performed by the guardian on behalf of a child who has not reached maturity. Korban is performed by an adult for themselves and their household.

When Each Takes Place

Aqiqah timing

Most recommended on the seventh day after birth, then day 14 and day 21, and still permitted after that. There is no strict expiry — see our aqiqah timing guide.

Korban timing

Fixed to specific dates: after the Aidiladha prayer on 10 Zulhijjah until sunset on 13 Zulhijjah. A slaughter outside that window is not korban, though it remains good charity.

Animal Count and Type

This is where the confusion usually starts, because both acts use similar animals but count them on completely different bases.

How aqiqah is counted

The count follows the child's gender: two goats or sheep for a boy, one for a girl. It does not depend on how many adults are in the household.

How korban is counted

The count follows the number of people offering. One goat represents one person; one cow can be shared between seven.

Sharing a cow

The seven-share arrangement is standard practice for korban and is organised by mosques each year. For aqiqah, that kind of sharing is a point of scholarly discussion and is not what most Malaysian families do.

That is why aqiqah packages are usually sold per animal and by the baby's gender, rather than by share.

How the Meat Is Distributed

Aqiqah meat

It is recommended to cook it before distributing. The family may eat their share, and the rest goes to neighbours, friends and those in need.

Korban meat

Usually distributed raw and divided into set categories, including a portion for the poor. Mosque korban committees generally follow this structure.

Who receives aqiqah meat is covered in aqiqah meat distribution.

Can Aqiqah and Korban Be Combined?

The question comes up when a child is born close to Aidiladha. Scholars differ.

The permitting view

Some scholars hold that a single slaughter may satisfy both intentions, since both are acts of drawing near to Allah through sacrifice.

The restricting view

Others hold that each act has its own cause and therefore needs its own animal. This is the more cautious position.

If this applies to your family, ask your state religious office before deciding.

The safest approach

If your means allow, slaughter separately — one for the child's aqiqah, one for korban. That way there is no doubt at all about the validity of either.

If means are tight, prioritise whichever is time-bound and postpone the other. Aqiqah has no expiry, while korban is fixed to specific dates, so many families offer the korban first and hold the aqiqah after the festival.

Did You Know? 💡

Both acts share almost identical animal conditions: a minimum age, good health, and freedom from obvious defects such as blindness or lameness.

That is why providers who handle korban usually handle aqiqah as well — the livestock standard and slaughter process are the same. The full conditions are in aqiqah animal requirements.

Aqiqah and Korban FAQ

Can aqiqah be performed during Zulhijjah?

Yes. Aqiqah is not restricted to any month.

An adult who never had an aqiqah — korban first or aqiqah first?

Both are recommended acts and there is no binding order. See the discussion in aqiqah in adulthood.

Can a cow be used for aqiqah as it is for korban?

Some Syafi'i scholars allow one cow to count as seven aqiqah shares. Goat remains the primary choice, since it is what the hadith names.

Is an aqiqah package different from a korban package?

Yes. Aqiqah packages usually include cooking, because aqiqah meat is recommended to be cooked. See the tiers on aqiqah package in Ipoh or your own area.

Conclusion

Aqiqah marks the birth of a child; korban marks Aidiladha. Different reasons, different timing, different distribution. Neither substitutes for the other.
